Richly traditional and finely woven, this rug presents the classic Mahi, or ‘fish’, design: a small lobed medallion at the centre, surrounded by a field packed edge to edge with the tiny Herati lattice of rosettes and curved leaves. The drawing is dense and precise, the whole surface humming with detail.
Its colouring sets it apart — the Herati lattice is worked in deep rose-pink and navy, so the field glows a warm dark rose rather than the usual red or blue. A soft ivory medallion and matching corner spandrels lift the centre, and a wide ivory border of floral palmettes, scattered with sage, gold, and red, frames the design. Dark rose leads, cooled by navy and brightened by cream.
Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with the tight double knot, the rug shows the very high knot count the Mahi design demands — the only way to render its tiny, repeating motifs so cleanly. Warm and richly patterned, it brings depth and character to a living room, dining room, or study. As a one-of-a-kind handmade piece, no other rug shares its exact colours, drawing, or character.
