On a luminous ivory ground, a small jewelled medallion holds the centre of this rug, its heart worked in deep green and sky-blue florets. Around it spreads a densely flowering field — scrolling arabesque vines, shah-abbasi palmettes and tiny blossoms in rose, teal, soft green, cornflower blue and gold. The pale field lets every flower and tendril stand out, so the whole rug reads like a garden drawn in fine line and colour on cream.
What frames and defines the piece is its wide rose-coral border, a flowing procession of palmettes and leafy vines picked out in teal, gold, blue and ivory, edged by deep navy guard stripes and a delicate floral minor band. The warm rose of the border gathers up the scattered pinks of the field and lifts the whole design, giving a classical pattern an unusually soft, romantic warmth. Dark indigo corner spandrels anchor the composition and make the ivory field glow all the brighter.
Hand-knotted in Pakistan with the fine Persian double knot, the rug is woven in pure wool on a cotton foundation — the pile dense and even, the curvilinear detail crisp throughout, finished with a hand-tied ivory fringe. Light and elegant rather than heavy, it suits a living room, a formal sitting room, a study or a bedroom, bringing warmth without darkening a space. As a hand-knotted piece, it is genuinely one of a kind.
