A finely hand-knotted double-knot rug from Pakistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation in the Afshan Shah Abbasi design. The ivory-cream field is worked edge to edge with an ogival lattice of curving brown vines and long serrated saz leaves, enclosing fan-shaped Shah Abbasi palmettes, rosettes and small flower sprays in sage green, teal, coral and soft brown.

A deep brown main border of palmettes and scrolling vine frames the field, stepped out through several fine guard stripes. The muted, antique-toned palette is what gives the piece its character. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Afshan means scattered or sprinkled in Persian, and it names one of the great classical layouts: a field with no central medallion at all, where flowers, vines and leaves run continuously from edge to edge so the eye can enter anywhere. Here that scattering is disciplined by an ogival lattice, the curving brown vines and long serrated saz leaves meeting at regular intervals to frame each Shah Abbasi palmette in its own compartment. The palmette itself is the fan-shaped flowerhead named for Shah Abbas, the Safavid ruler whose royal workshops fixed these designs in the seventeenth century. Woven in Pakistan on the double knot, the denser of the two knots used there, which is what allows a lattice this fine and a palette this subtle to hold together across a rug of this size.
