Blush and Ochre Medallion Tabriz, Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Rug

Hand-knotted from wool with silk, with a natural fringe at both ends. On a rug with this little colour contrast the silk is not decorative but structural: the lustre of the silk-blended pile is most of what separates the medallion and spandrels from the field, and it is what makes the design resolve as the light moves.

Wool and silk shrink at different rates, so this rug must never be washed, steamed or shampooed — any deep clean is a job for a specialist in mixed-fibre rugs. Everything here is pale and closely toned, so there is almost nothing to disguise a mark; this is a rug for a low-traffic spot, a bedside or a wall rather than a hallway.

Break this rug down by colour and something unusual appears: there is barely any variation to find. Cluster the whole surface and the eight most common tones all sit between hue 24 and hue 36 — a span of twelve degrees out of three hundred and sixty — with saturation ranging only from 0.19 to 0.30. The blush field, the ochre spandrels, the sage border and the medallion are not four different colours so much as four small adjustments of the same one.

Rugs are usually built the other way round, with the medallion, spandrels and border each given a colour of its own so the parts separate cleanly. Here they are allowed to sit almost on top of one another, and the design has to be read through shape and silk lustre rather than through colour change — the cusped outline of the medallion, the lobed edge where each spandrel meets the field, the palmettes marching round the border. Stand back and the rug reads as a single soft expanse; come closer and the structure resolves. It is the reason a piece this small can carry a full medallion design without looking crowded, and the reason it will sit quietly against almost any floor.
