A pale blush field carrying a small cusped lozenge medallion in soft gold, with a slender pendant above and below it and large olive-gold spandrels closing the field corners. Scattered floral sprays in gold, olive, grey-blue and cream fill the ground between. A wide pale gold border of palmettes and leafy scrolls frames the field, backed by narrow guards of small rosettes. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool with silk. The palette is the narrowest of its kind: measured across the whole surface, eighty-eight per cent falls into a single orange-gold range and almost all the rest is cream, with under two per cent of the rug carrying any colour outside the warm band at all. At 63×92cm this is a small mat, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a wall hanging.

Hand-knotted from wool with silk, with a natural fringe at both ends. On a rug this tonally narrow the silk is doing structural work — with so little colour contrast available, the lustre of the silk-blended pile is what separates the medallion, spandrels and border from the field.

Wool and silk shrink at different rates, so this rug must never be washed, steamed or shampooed — any deep clean is a job for a specialist in mixed-fibre rugs. The whole palette is pale and closely grouped, so there is very little tonal contrast to disguise a mark; this is a rug for a low-traffic spot rather than a hallway.

Find the red. There is very little of it — measured across the whole rug it comes to under two per cent of the surface — and it is the only colour here that sits outside the warm yellow-to-orange band that everything else occupies. The blush ground, the gold medallion, the olive spandrels, the cream border: all of them are variations within one narrow range. Eighty-eight per cent of the rug falls into a single colour family.

Where that red has been put is the interesting part. There is a small diamond of it at the exact centre of the medallion — the geometric middle of the whole rug — and the rest is scattered as tiny flower hearts and buds through the field. Nothing else on the rug is allowed to break the warm range, so those few points of red carry all the punctuation, and the eye goes to the centre first because that is where the largest of them sits. It is an unusually disciplined way to direct attention on a rug this quiet: not with a bold medallion or a contrasting ground, but with perhaps a teaspoon of differently dyed wool, placed exactly.
