Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A pale blush field carrying large scrolling leaves in soft sage, curling outward from the centre, with flowering sprays in coral, red, gold and black threaded between them. At the centre sits a small rosette medallion inside a plain cusped reserve — a panel of open blush left almost entirely free of drawing. A wide blush border of palmettes and rosettes frames the field, backed by narrow guards of small hooked devices. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The reserve around the medallion is the organising idea: measured, it carries roughly a tenth of the ornament that the field beside it does. At 62×96cm this is a small mat, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a wall hanging. A pale blush ground is at the less forgiving end and will show marks more readily than a dark rug.

  • Type: Hand-knotted pile rug
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Design: Scrolling leaf medallion with reserved centre panel
  • Size: 62×96cm (2'0"×3'2") — Extra Small
  • Colour: Blush and sage, with coral, red and gold
  • SKU: MD 317636
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

A pale blush ground is less forgiving than a red or dark rug, and the reserved centre panel is the most exposed part of the whole piece — it is the palest area, it has no drawing to disguise a mark, and on a small mat it sits directly where a foot lands. That is the trade-off for the openness.

The centre of this rug has been deliberately emptied. Around the small rosette medallion there is a cusped panel — a reserve — where the drawing simply stops, leaving plain blush wool. Measured against the field on either side, the difference is stark: the reserve runs at eight to eighteen per cent ornament, the field beside it at around fifty. The busy part of the rug is three to six times more densely drawn than the quiet part at its centre.

This is the opposite of how most medallion rugs are built. Usually the medallion is the densest thing on the rug and the field around it thins out; here the field carries the weight — big sage leaves scrolling outward, flowers threaded between them — and the centre is where the eye is allowed to rest. The effect is that the medallion reads as small and precise rather than commanding, and the rug as a whole feels more open than its size suggests. Put a hand over the medallion and the field looks crowded; take it away and the reserve holds the whole thing in balance.
