A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. Five navy octagonal medallions run down a bright red field, each holding a rosette in coral and ivory, with hooked stems, blossoms and small cross devices worked in near-black across the ground between them.

Wide navy borders carry stylised cypress trees and flower heads in coral and ivory, framed by fine guard stripes, and the rug is finished with a grey fringe. At 286cm long and 89cm wide this is a true runner, made for a hallway or a long kitchen. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Five medallions along nearly three metres is a generous spacing for a Khan Muhammadi runner, and it changes the character of the rug: rather than a tight sequence passing underfoot, the medallions are set well apart with room for the field to breathe between them. That field is not empty — hooked stems and blossoms in near-black run through it — but the red carries far more of the surface than it does on the denser versions, which is what makes this one read bright rather than deep from a distance. The grey fringe gives the ends a cooler finish where ivory would have warmed them further. Woven in northern Afghanistan.
