A camel field — uncommon for this weave, which usually runs red — carrying three columns of Turkmen güls in mahogany, coral and cream, with small cruciform minor güls standing between them. The framing is unusually deep for the size of the rug: seven or eight narrow bands of stars, dogtooth and small rosettes in mahogany and cream, and a broad end panel of tall stepped forms. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. Putting the güls on a camel rather than a red ground changes the whole character: the design reads quiet and tonal rather than graphic, because the mahogany and coral of the güls sit much closer in value to the field than they would against red. At 172×243cm this is a room-sized rug for a sitting room or under a small dining table. A mid-toned camel ground shows marks more than a dark rug but less than a cream one.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and a room-sized rug spreads wear over a large area rather than concentrating it.

A camel ground sits between the extremes: it will show marks more readily than the dark red Bokharas but considerably less than a cream rug. Use a rug pad, particularly under furniture legs.

The gül repeat here is the standard one, but the ground is not, and that single change does more than it appears to. A Bokhara is normally woven on madder red, and against red the mahogany and cream of the güls read as strong contrast — the rug is graphic, the emblems jump forward. On camel the same güls sit much closer to the field in brightness, so the contrast drops and the design reads as texture rather than as pattern. From standing height this rug looks like a woven surface with a rhythm in it, where the red version looks like rows of medallions. Neither is better; they are different objects made from the same drawing. Note also how deep the framing is for a rug this size — seven or eight bands, which is more than the field strictly needs and is part of why the composition feels contained rather than open.
