A hand-woven kilim in the Qashqai manner, made in 100% hand-spun wool. A long stepped medallion fills the cerise-red field, worked as a lattice of small compartments each holding a cross or star in navy, sky blue, green, ivory, coral and grey — no two neighbouring compartments coloured alike.

Wide borders of yellow, green and cerise carry zigzags, chevrons and running ribbon devices, with a striped panel at one end. This is slit-tapestry kilim: the pattern is woven into the cloth itself, so the surface is smooth and the rug is fully reversible. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Always use a rug pad underneath — a flatweave slips easily without one.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off.
  • Turn the kilim over every year — it is fully reversible and wears evenly if used both sides.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Have the kilim professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

Slit tapestry is the oldest and simplest way of weaving a pattern: each colour is worked back and forth across its own area, and where two colours meet the weaver leaves a narrow vertical slit rather than interlocking them. It produces a smooth, thin cloth finished identically on both faces, and it forces every outline into steps, since a diagonal can only be built from stacked rectangles. That constraint is the whole aesthetic. Here the compartments inside the great medallion are filled almost at random — navy beside sky blue beside ivory beside coral — so the eye keeps finding new arrangements, and the wide yellow and green borders push the cerise field forward rather than containing it.
