A cream field worked in a fine all-over vine, thick with small boteh, palmettes and rosettes in wine, teal, moss, rose and gold. A lobed medallion in soft brown sits at the centre on a teal core, with pendants reaching to either end and four broad spandrels of the same brown filling the corners, each carrying a pair of large boteh. The wide main border repeats the boteh at yet another scale on a warm brown ground, edged by narrow guard bands of interlocking scroll, with cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk at 36/36 quality — 36 knots to the inch in each direction, close to 1,300 to the square inch and around two million knots in this rug. The pile carries a directional sheen, so from one end the cream field warms and the browns come forward, and from the other the ground cools and the teal and wine accents lift instead. At 78×123cm this suits a bedside, an entry or a spot beside a chair. The palette is soft and closely held rather than high-contrast, which makes it easy to live with but means it photographs flatter than it looks in the room.

100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 36/36 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

The cream ground will show a spill more readily than a dark rug would, though the density of the pattern hides light marking better than a plain pale field. A silk this fine also shades and tracks where it is walked on — normal, and it reverses when the pile is brushed back. Use a rug pad underneath.

The boteh — the almond with the bent tip, the shape Europe borrowed and renamed paisley after the Scottish mill town that copied it onto shawls — appears in this rug at three different sizes, and that is the thing worth looking for. Tiny ones are scattered through the field among the vine, barely larger than the rosettes beside them. Bigger ones sit in pairs inside each corner spandrel. Bigger again, they run the length of the main border. Scaling a single motif across three registers is a workshop device for holding a design together: the eye reads the rug as one idea rather than three separate zones, without the weaver having to repeat anything literally. Once you have found the three sizes you will also notice the boteh all lean the same way within each band, and reverse direction between bands, which is how the border keeps moving rather than marching.
