A cream field densely worked in scrolling vine and small blossoms, with a lobed medallion at the centre in rose and pale blue and a pendant reaching from each end of it. The palette runs to rose, crimson, sky blue, sage, gold and brown, all held against the cream so the field reads as light. A rose-pink main border of flowering vine frames it — an uncommon ground colour, and the thing that gives this rug its character — closed by a cream outer border and fine guard stripes. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool at a fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. At 205×305cm this is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. Both the cream field and the rose border are pale, so this is a rug for a considered room rather than a working one; it will show traffic and spills more readily than a dark rug would.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends.

Both the cream field and the rose border are pale, so this rug shows traffic and spills more readily than a dark one. The rose is also the least light-fast colour on it — pink is a weak red, and weak dye fades first — so the border will lose tone before the field does. A fine pile crushes under furniture legs, so use a rug pad.

The medallion has a proper name and so do the two shapes hanging off it. In Persian the central medallion is the toranj and the pendant at each end is the sar-toranj, the head of the medallion. They are not decoration added to a finished shape: the pendants extend the medallion along the long axis of the rug, which is how a round form is made to sit comfortably in a rectangle. Cover them with a hand and the medallion suddenly looks stranded; uncover them and it reaches to the ends. The other thing worth knowing is the border colour. A rose-pink ground of this kind is uncommon and comparatively demanding, because pink in natural dyeing is not a colour in its own right but a weak red — madder or cochineal used at low concentration — and weak dye is exactly what fades first. A rug that has held an even rose across a border this wide has been dyed carefully, and it is also the part of this rug most worth keeping out of the sun.
