A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. A column of small dark octagonal medallions runs the length of a bright crimson field, each holding a coral rosette, with hooked stems and blossoms in near-black filling the ground between them so the red shows through only in the gaps.

A wide navy main border carries palmettes and flowering vine, framed by red and ivory guard stripes, and the rug is finished with a grey fringe rather than the usual ivory. At 292cm long and 90cm wide this is a true runner, made for a hallway or a long kitchen. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

The red on this runner is brighter than the madder usually seen on Khan Muhammadi weaving, and the weaver has answered it with a near-black filling pattern dense enough to hold it in check — hooked stems, small blossoms and crosses packed around each medallion so that the crimson reads as glow rather than as flat colour. Walk its length and the medallions come one after another down the centre while the field around them never quite settles. The grey fringe is the other departure; ivory is the norm, and grey gives the ends a cooler finish that suits the brightness of the pile. Woven in northern Afghanistan.
