A vivid crimson field divided into a column of large compartments by broad taupe bands edged with small hooked spurs. Each compartment holds a big stepped diamond medallion worked in pale celadon, cream, brown and red. Wide multi-band borders of diamond diaper and star repeats in taupe, celadon, cream and red frame the field, closing at the end with a band of hooked palmette forms. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The palette is built on a deliberate gap: the crimson ground runs at close to full saturation while the celadon and taupe that carry all the drawing are nearly grey. At 78×360cm this is a long runner, suited to a corridor or a hall. A vivid crimson ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which makes this a practical choice for a corridor that gets real use.

A vivid crimson ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have and hides everyday marks well. The pale celadon and taupe are the vulnerable colours here — being nearly grey already, they have little room to grey further before the drawing starts to look tired, and they carry the entire design. On a runner of this length wear concentrates heavily at the busier end.

Nearly every colour on this rug is quiet except one, and the gap between them is larger than it looks. Measured, the crimson ground sits at about 0.88 saturation — close to as pure as wool takes a dye — while the pale celadon that fills the medallions measures around 0.14, and the taupe of the dividing bands is much the same. That is roughly a sixfold difference. The ground is shouting and everything drawn on it is almost grey.

This is a less obvious way to build a rug than it sounds. The usual approach is to answer a strong ground with strong drawing — indigo and ivory on madder, say — so that the motifs hold their own. Here the drawing gives up the contest entirely and wins by contrast of intensity rather than of hue: the celadon reads as cool and recessive precisely because it has so little colour in it, and the medallions sit back into the field instead of standing off it. The practical effect is a rug that reads as calm from a distance despite a ground that is anything but, which is a useful quality in a corridor you pass through many times a day.
