Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A deep madder red field left open through the middle, with the whole design pushed out to a frame around it. Slender flowering trees in cream stand along both long sides, branches lifted and tipped with small blue and gold blossoms. At the corners and at the centre of each end sit larger, heavier forms — splayed palmettes with hooked arms in gold, teal and blue — and the whole is bounded by a cusped green-and-gold line that turns inward at the corners rather than running straight. A single row of small rosettes finishes the outer edge.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool, a highland Afghan fleece with a high lanolin content that gives the surface its sheen. The red is unusually saturated for this weave and carries visible abrash — the wide horizontal banding where one dye lot gave way to the next. At 158×239cm this is a room-sized rug, and the open centre means nothing important is lost when a table or seating group covers it. A deep red ground is also practical, hiding everyday marks far better than a pale rug would.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and the lanolin in a highland fleece like this one gives it a degree of natural resistance to soiling.

The open centre is where furniture and feet will fall, and with no pattern there to disguise them, footmarks and vacuum tracks will show more than they would on a drawn field. The abrash banding in the red is a feature of hand-spun, small-lot dyed wool and will not even out over time. Use a rug pad, particularly under furniture legs.

The trees are not scattered, they are standing in a row, and they all face inward. Along each long side a line of slender flowering trees rises from the border towards the centre, so the open red field reads as ground they are planted around rather than as empty space. That is the difference between this and a plain rug with a decorated border: the motifs have an orientation and a relationship to the middle, which gives the emptiness a reason. Look at the cusped line that bounds them. Instead of running straight to the corners it turns inward and steps around each of the large corner palmettes, so the frame is drawn around the motifs rather than the motifs being fitted inside a frame. That is the harder way round and it is what stops the design looking like a border catalogue. The heavy splayed forms at the corners and ends are the anchors; the light trees between them are the rhythm.
