Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A finely hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The deep red field carries a dense grid of small octagonal Turkmen güls, ten across and more than twenty down, each one quartered in navy, ivory and rust, packed so tightly that the pattern reads as woven texture rather than as motifs placed on a ground.

The borders are unusually elaborate for a rug this size — seven bands in all, alternating red, navy and ivory, carrying hooks, rosettes and running vine, with an ivory fringe at both ends. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Origin: Afghanistan
  • Type: Khan Muhammadi, all-over Turkmen gül design
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Size: 92×198cm (Small Rugs (2x3 - 4x6))
  • Colour: Deep red field with navy and ivory güls and multi-band borders
  • SKU: NKM20202
  • One-of-a-kind: yes

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Where most Khan Muhammadi rugs give you a handful of large medallions to read one at a time, this one does the opposite: hundreds of small güls packed into a tight grid across the entire field, each still fully drawn with its quartered interior and hooked edges. It is far more work than the large-medallion version and it shows in the density of the knotting. The borders match that ambition — seven separate bands framing a rug under two metres long, where three or four would be normal. Stand back and the field reads as one deep red textile; step closer and it resolves into a grid you could count. Woven in northern Afghanistan.
