Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A deep red field worked all over in flowering vine — palmettes, rosettes and serrated leaves in teal, moss, ivory and gold, packed so tightly that the red reads as a colour glimpsed between flowers rather than an open ground. At the centre a small lobed medallion in near-black navy holds a single ivory rosette, and four ivory cloudbands curl into the corners, their pale scrolling ribbons the only large areas of light in the whole design. A near-black main border of flowering vine and several fine guard stripes close it in, with a clear red selvedge and cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk at 30/30 quality — 30 knots to the inch in each direction, about 900 to the square inch. The silk takes dye deeply, which is why the reds stay saturated rather than turning brick, and the pile carries a directional sheen that lifts the teal foliage from one end and the gold from the other. At 75×123cm this is a bedside, entry or accent piece. Unlike a pale rug it hides everyday marks well, though the dark ground will show lint and pale fibres more than it shows dirt.

100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 30/30 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

A dark ground is forgiving of everyday marks but shows lint, pet hair and pale fibres readily. The reds and teals here are vivid, and vivid dyes fade faster than muted ones, so keep it out of strong light. Use a rug pad underneath to stop it creeping and to take the abrasion off the foundation.

The four pale shapes in the corners are cloudbands — chi in Chinese, a ribbon-like scrolling cloud that reached Persian weaving through Timurid court workshops in the fifteenth century and never left. They are doing structural work, not just decoration. On a field this dark and this densely flowered, the eye has nothing to hold on to; the weaver places the only four areas of ivory at the corners so they pull the gaze diagonally inward to the medallion, which is itself reversed in value — dark on dark, lit by a single ivory rosette at its centre. That reversal is the hardest thing to bring off at this scale, and it is why the medallion is kept small. Look at how the vine behind the cloudbands does not stop at their edge but appears to pass beneath them, as if the clouds were floating above the garden rather than cut into it.
