Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The deep red field carries a grid of octagonal Turkmen güls, six across and fourteen down, each quartered and filled with hooked motifs in ivory, black and rust, with smaller cross-form devices set between the rows.

Seven border bands frame the field, alternating red, navy and ivory and carrying hooks, rosettes and a running vine, with a plain red outer edge and ivory fringe at both ends. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

The gül is the tribal emblem of the Turkmen peoples of Central Asia, repeated down a rug so that the weaving announced who had made it. Here the güls are set out in a full grid rather than a single file, six across and fourteen down, each one drawn complete with its quartered interior and hooked edges. What makes the rug is the restraint of the palette against the density of the drawing — everything is red, ivory and black, nothing else, so the eye reads structure rather than colour, and the seven border bands framing it all keep the field held in tightly. The wool is madder-dyed, which means the red will deepen rather than fade with the years.
