A finely hand-knotted Khan Muhammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The deep red field carries a dense grid of small octagonal Turkmen güls running the entire length, six across and more than thirty down, each quartered and picked out in ivory, black and rust so that the surface reads as continuous woven texture.

Seven border bands frame the field, alternating red, navy and ivory with hooks, rosettes and running vine. At 286cm long and 83cm wide this is a true runner, made for a hallway or a long kitchen. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

A gül grid is demanding on any rug, and on a runner it is relentless: the weaver has to hold the same spacing and the same drawing through more than thirty rows without the grid drifting, because any error accumulates down the length and shows at the far end. This one holds. The palette stays to red, ivory and black throughout, which is what lets the structure read at all — with more colours the density would collapse into noise. Walk its length and the güls pass underfoot in an unbroken rhythm, the seven border bands running alongside like margins on a page. Woven in northern Afghanistan in madder-dyed wool, which deepens rather than fades.
