A near-black indigo field carrying a dense scrolling arabesque of palmettes, curled leaves and small blossoms in gold, cream, teal and rust, with a lobed medallion at the centre worked in gold and coral and pendants reaching to either end. Gold spandrels fill the corners, and a wide terracotta-red main border of flowering vine frames the whole, backed by gold guard bands. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian.
Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. The palette is warm all the way through — there is no cool colour anywhere except the small teal accents — so the rug reads as glowing rather than as contrasting, with the indigo working as depth behind the gold rather than as a colour in its own right. At 199×309cm this is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out.
