A deep madder red field carrying an all-over Sarouk garden design: small footed vases with flowering plants rising from them, slender cypresses, palmettes and rosettes in gold, cream, sage, teal and black, arranged in mirrored pairs about the centre line. A deep indigo border of large vases and palmettes frames the field, backed by fine barber-pole guards in gold and red. Cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in wool to the 10/16 quality. Unlike a purely abstract floral, much of what is drawn here is a recognisable object — a vase, a plant in a pot, a tree — so the field reads as a garden rather than as pattern. At 63×93cm this is a small mat, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a wall hanging. A deep red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have.
