Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-woven kilim from Afghanistan, made in 100% hand-spun wool. A finely striped centre panel of rose, plum and slate is enclosed by broad magenta borders carrying rows of soumak-embroidered diamonds in orange, ivory, indigo and pink, with wide banded end panels of cross and zigzag repeats.

The colour is the unusual part: a strong cerise-magenta runs through the whole piece, far brighter than the madder reds these weavings normally use. Being a flatweave it is thin, light and reversible. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Origin: Afghanistan
  • Type: Kilim, banded flatweave with soumak embroidery
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Size: 188×270cm (Medium Rugs (5x8 - 6x9))
  • Colour: Magenta and rose with orange, ivory and indigo banding
  • SKU: NKL91133

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool, flat-woven with soumak embroidered banding. No pile.

Care instructions

  • Always use a rug pad underneath — a flatweave slips easily without one.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off, working along the bands rather than across them.
  • Turn the kilim over every year — it is reversible and wears evenly if used both sides.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Have the kilim professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

Afghan flatweaves are usually built on madder red — the root dye that gives the deep brick tones seen across most of the region. This one is not. The cerise-magenta running through it is a brighter, cooler colour altogether, and it changes what the rug does in a room: where a madder kilim sits back and warms a space, this one reads as a colour statement and will hold its own against modern furniture. The structure underneath is entirely traditional — a striped centre panel, deep soumak-embroidered borders, banded ends — so what you have is a familiar weaving in an unfamiliar palette, which is exactly the combination that tends to sell out of a collection first.
