Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A finely hand-knotted double-knot rug from Pakistan, woven in a blend of 60 percent hand-spun wool and 40 percent silk on a cotton foundation, in the classic Tabriz Mahi design. Mahi means fish in Persian, and the name comes from the small sickle-shaped leaves that curve around each rosette like fish around a pool.

A deep navy lobed medallion sits at the centre, holding a beige diamond core, with the same minutely drawn Mahi lattice running through both the medallion and the surrounding cream-beige field. A deep red main border of palmettes and rosettes frames the design, separated by soft sage-green guard stripes, with a plain navy band closing the outer edge. The silk content gives the pile a distinct sheen that shifts as the light moves across it. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum gently on a low setting, avoiding the fringes.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight, which the silk is especially sensitive to.
  • Have the rug professionally cleaned by a specialist familiar with silk-blend pile.

Mahi is the Persian word for fish, and it names one of the most enduring designs in carpet weaving: a rosette set inside a small diamond, with four curved sickle leaves turning around it like fish circling in water. Repeated at this scale the unit becomes a shimmering all-over lattice, which is why the design is also known as Herati, after the city of Herat where it is thought to have taken shape. Tabriz made it famous, and workshops across Persia and Pakistan have woven it ever since. This piece is a Pakistani double-knot rendering — the denser of the two knots used there, which is what allows the Mahi lattice to be drawn this finely — and the forty percent silk in the pile gives the navy medallion and the cream field a sheen that shifts as you move around the rug.
