A warm terracotta field is covered edge to edge with the intricate ‘Mahi’ (fish) design — a jewel-box lattice of tiny leaves, blossoms and ‘fish’ in blue, rose, green, gold and cream — around a small central medallion and bold blue corner spandrels, in this finely knotted Persian Ardabil. A deep, flowering border of palmettes and paisleys, closing with a striking gold boteh band, frames the field. Ardabil rugs are prized for exactly this: dense, colourful, precisely drawn geometry.

Ardabil rugs are known for their fine knotting and durable, hard-wearing pile, hand-spun from highland wool. The rich, warm palette suits both traditional and contemporary rooms and only mellows with age. Coloured with natural dyes and worked entirely by hand over many months, it carries the subtle irregularities of a true one-of-a-kind piece — an heirloom to be handed down for generations.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen, and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum gently on low suction without a rotating brush, and avoid the fringes.
  • Use a rug pad underneath to cushion the pile and prevent slipping.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the natural-dyed colours.
  • Use only a specialist hand-wash rug cleaner for any deep clean.

Ardabil, in the mountains of Persian Azerbaijan, gives its name to some of the most colourful and finely woven rugs in Iran. This example follows the ‘Mahi’ (Herati or ‘fish’) design — a dense all-over lattice of tiny leaves and blossoms — worked in glowing polychrome across a warm terracotta field, with a small central medallion and bold blue corner spandrels. Knotted by hand from highland wool and coloured with natural dyes, it is a genuine one-of-a-kind — a richly characterful heirloom.
