Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A madder red field with no medallion and no centre — instead staggered rows of small flowering shrubs, each a stem with paired hooked leaves and a crown of blossoms, alternating with bands of rosettes, star flowers and stepped lozenges. The palette is fully open: indigo, ivory, apricot, gold, green and pale blue all appear, with no two adjacent shrubs coloured the same way. A wide ivory main border of serrated palmettes frames it, flanked by indigo guard stripes of small rosettes and a red selvedge. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. Everything here is drawn rectilinearly — every curve built from steps, no true diagonals anywhere — which is the mark of village weaving rather than workshop drawing from a cartoon. The colours carry visible abrash, particularly in the red ground, where wide horizontal bands show where one dye lot gave way to the next. At 80×309cm this is a runner for a corridor or a landing. A saturated red ground is practical in a busy space and hides everyday marks far better than a pale rug would.

  • Type: Hand-knotted pile rug, runner

  • Size: 80×309cm (2'7"×10'2") — Runner
  • Colour: Red and ivory, with indigo and gold
  • SKU: RK 1171
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which makes a Kazak a sensible choice for a corridor that gets real use.

The abrash banding in the red ground is a feature of hand-spun, small-lot dyed wool rather than a fault, and it will not even out over time. A runner takes concentrated traffic down its centre line, so use a rug pad and rotate it end for end regularly.

Look for what is not here: a medallion, corner spandrels, and any curved line at all. The field is a scattered all-over, the kind of design where the pattern simply continues until the border cuts it — follow the shrubs to the edge and you will find them sliced through mid-stem, because the drawing was never meant to stop there. What makes it a village piece rather than a workshop one is the rectilinear construction. Every apparent curve is a staircase of right angles, because the weaver is working without a squared paper cartoon and building each form directly on the grid of warp and weft. That constraint is also a freedom: no two shrubs in this rug carry the same combination of colours, which no workshop rug would ever do, since a cartoon fixes the palette along with the shape. The abrash in the red ground belongs to the same story — small dye lots, changed as they ran out, banding the field horizontally.
