A rose field carrying three medallions in a column. The two at the ends are matching octagons in sage and rose, each holding an eight-pointed ivory star; the one between them is larger and quite different — an ivory ground carrying a cruciform medallion with hooked arms in sage and rose. Small squares, rosettes and hooked devices fill the field around them. Wide borders of stepped devices and reciprocal forms in navy, ivory, blue-grey and rose frame the field on all four sides. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The three medallions are not a repeat: the outer two are twins and the centre one is unrelated to them, so the rug is built as a composition with a true middle rather than as a length of pattern. At 86×170cm this is a small rug, suited to a bedside, a study or a hallway. A mid-toned rose ground is reasonably forgiving of everyday marks, though the ivory centre medallion will show wear first.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and at this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out.

A mid-toned rose ground hides everyday marks better than a pale rug. The ivory of the centre medallion is the part to watch — it is the palest thing on the rug and it sits at the exact middle, which on a small rug placed in an open space is where most of the traffic crosses.

Three medallions down the centre, and they are not three of the same thing. The two at the ends are twins — matching octagons in sage and rose, each with an eight-pointed ivory star at its heart, drawn identically down to the little hooked combs around their edges. The one in the middle shares nothing with them: it is larger, it sits on ivory rather than sage, and instead of a star it carries a cruciform medallion with hooked arms reaching out to four sides. Cover the middle one and the rug looks like a fragment of a repeat; uncover it and it becomes a composition.

That A–B–A arrangement is what gives this rug a true centre, and it is worth knowing because it changes how the rug should be placed. A design that repeats can be cut or positioned anywhere and still look right. This one cannot: it is symmetrical about the middle medallion, so it wants to sit centred in a space — at the foot of a bed, in the middle of a study floor — rather than running off under furniture. Fold it end to end and the two halves match; fold it any other way and they do not.
