A hand-woven Maliki kilim from Afghanistan, made in 100% hand-spun wool. Unlike a knotted rug this is a flatweave, built as a sequence of horizontal bands running the full width rather than a field inside a border, alternating plain woven stripes with raised soumak-embroidered rows of diamonds, hooks, combs and stylised flowers.
The palette runs through rust, apricot, madder red, cream, gold, navy and olive, with no two bands repeating in the same order. Being flat-woven it is thin, light and reversible, and works as well over a larger rug or on a wall as it does alone on the floor. A one-of-a-kind piece.
