Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A finely hand-woven kilim from Afghanistan, made in 100% hand-spun wool. A large stepped medallion in scarlet and blue fills the centre of a camel-gold field, with pendant cartouches above and below and blue spandrels closing the corners, all drawn in the manner of a knotted town carpet rather than a tribal flatweave.

Band after band of border frames it — running vine, palmettes, rosettes and a Greek-key stripe at the outer edge — in scarlet, cobalt, brown and cream. The ends finish in natural brown goat-hair fringe. Being a flatweave it is thin, light and reversible. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Always use a rug pad underneath — a flatweave slips easily without one.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off.
  • Turn the kilim over every year — it is reversible and wears evenly if used both sides.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Have the kilim professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

This is a flatweave reaching for the look of a formal knotted carpet, and largely getting there. The medallion is drawn with pendants and spandrels in the town manner rather than the tribal one, the borders run six or seven deep with running vine and a Greek-key stripe at the edge, and the palette — scarlet, cobalt and camel — is closer to a Caucasian workshop than to a nomad loom. What gives it away as woven rather than knotted is the stepping: look along any curve and it climbs in small rectangles, because that is all the loom allows. The natural brown goat-hair fringe at each end is left untrimmed, a detail from the older way of finishing.
