Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A terracotta field with a long cream panel running almost its full length, edged in fine sawtooth and flanked on both sides by rows of small hooked motifs — a stem with a curl at each end, repeated down the length like a line of plants growing towards the panel. At the top the hooks gather into a short crown of stems; at the bottom four longer stems trail down into open ground. There is no border and no repeating pattern beyond that.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool, a highland Afghan fleece with a high lanolin content that gives the surface its sheen. The terracotta ground carries heavy abrash — wide horizontal banding where one dye lot gave way to the next — and the cream panel does too, shifting between wheat and pale gold along its length. At 82×286cm this is a runner for a corridor or a landing. The cream panel sits right where feet fall, so this suits a decorative hallway better than a working one.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and the lanolin in a highland fleece like this one gives it a degree of natural resistance to soiling.

The pale centre panel runs down the middle of the runner, exactly where traffic concentrates, and it will show marks far sooner than the terracotta ground around it. The abrash banding in both colours is a feature of hand-spun, small-lot dyed wool and will not even out over time. Use a rug pad and rotate the rug end for end regularly.

Count the hooks down one side and then down the other and the numbers will not match. Neither will the spacing, and neither will the height at which each one sits relative to its opposite. This is the clearest evidence there is that a gabbeh is composed at the loom rather than copied from a squared drawing: the weaver knows the motif and repeats it from memory, adjusting as the panel edge wanders, and the two sides drift apart over nearly three metres. A cartoon-woven rug is mirror-perfect because the paper is. Look also at the panel itself — it is fractionally wider at one end than the other, and its sawtooth edge changes tooth height as it climbs. The heavy abrash in both the terracotta and the cream comes from the same way of working: hand-spun yarn dyed in small lots, tied on as each runs out, banding the rug horizontally.
