Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A borderless all-over design in violet: rows of large palmettes and rosettes linked by a scrolling vine, running the full length of the runner and off both edges without a frame. The pattern sits pale lilac against a deep violet ground, and the contrast comes from the fibres rather than from two separate dyes — the silk takes colour lighter and returns the light, while the wool holds it darker and matte. The result shifts constantly as you move along it.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool with a silk pattern. Violet is an unusual ground for a hand-knotted rug and this is a saturated one, closer to an ink or an aubergine than to a pastel; it will dominate a room rather than sit quietly in it. At 75×347cm this is a long, narrow runner — nearly three and a half metres — so measure the corridor before committing. A dark ground hides everyday marks well, though a silk-faced pile will show footprints and vacuum tracks in any strong light.

Ghazni wool ground with a silk pattern, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. A mixed-fibre rug needs to be treated as the more delicate of its two materials: care for this one as you would a silk rug, not a wool one.

Violet is among the least light-fast colours in a dyer's range, and on a ground this saturated any fading will be obvious. Keep it well away from a sunny window. The dark ground hides everyday marks, but a silk-faced pile shades and tracks wherever it is walked on — normal, and it brushes back out.

Silk and wool do not take dye at the same rate. Put both into the same bath and the silk comes out lighter and glossier while the wool comes out deeper and matte, because the two fibres differ in how they absorb dye and how their surfaces return light. A weaver can use that difference as a drawing tool, and it is what produces the two tones here: the lilac palmettes and the violet ground are closer in dye than they look, separated mostly by what each fibre does with it. The practical consequence is that this rug has no fixed appearance. Walk one way down a corridor and the silk catches, the pattern lifts and the whole piece brightens; walk back and it sinks into a single deep violet. It also means the design is borderless by necessity as much as by fashion — a frame would ask for a third tone, and the whole effect here depends on there being only two.
