A wine red field carrying a dense diamond lattice in two sizes — large stepped diamonds running down the centre line, with smaller ones set between them and to either side, all filled edge to edge with tiny geometric devices in cream, apricot, teal and black. The red survives only as thin diagonal channels between the diamonds. Deep multi-band borders in the same palette frame it, closing with a broad end panel of stepped forms. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool with silk. Because the silk lies in the pile it returns light directionally, which on a rug this long has a particular consequence: approach from one end and the design lifts and glows, walk to the other end and turn back and the same rug reads darker and flatter. At 78×314cm this is a runner for a hallway or a landing. A wine ground hides everyday marks well, though a silk-faced pile shows footprints in strong light.

Wool pile with silk detail, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. A mixed-fibre rug needs to be treated as the more delicate of its two materials: care for this one as you would a silk rug, not a wool one.

The wine ground hides everyday marks well, but the silk will shade and show footprints wherever it is walked on — normal, and it brushes back out, though near-constant in a busy corridor. Use a rug pad and rotate the rug end for end regularly.

Silk in a pile rug returns light in one direction and absorbs it in the other, which is why a silk rug looks different from opposite sides of a room. On a runner that ordinary fact becomes something you experience by walking. Approach from one end and the silk faces you: the lattice lifts, the cream and apricot brighten, and the red drops back. Reach the far end, turn, and the same three metres read darker and flatter, with the red now dominant. Nothing about the rug has changed except your position relative to the nap. It is worth deciding which way round you want it before laying the rug — whichever end you approach from most often should be the end that makes it glow. The design itself is a Jaldar in two scales, large stepped diamonds down the centre line with smaller ones filling around them, packed so tightly that the wine ground survives only as narrow diagonal channels running between.
