A deep wine red field carrying a dense grid of round Turkmen güls, each quartered by a cross and filled with curled hooks in cream, black and red, threaded on fine dark lines running the length of the rug, with smaller cruciform devices standing between them. Very wide multi-band borders of rosettes, hooked repeats and dense diaper in dark red, navy and cream frame the field. Cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan. The gül here is drawn as a circle rather than the flattened octagon more usual in this design — a harder shape to build on a knot grid, since a curve can only be approximated in small steps. At 200×288cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room. A deep red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have.
