Slate Blue and Cream Radial Floral Round, Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Rug

The blue ground hides everyday marks better than the paler rounds, but the cream silk drawing sits proud of it and will shade and track wherever it is walked on. That shading is normal and brushes back out. A round rug needs a round pad or one cut to shape; a rectangular pad will show as ridges under the curved edges.

On a rectangular rug a medallion has to invent a centre. The shape has no natural middle — a rectangle has two axes of different length — so the weaver places a medallion to create one, and the whole composition is organised around that decision. A circle arrives with its centre already built in, and a designer then has a choice: work against it, or lean into it. This one leans in. Everything radiates from a single small rosette at the exact middle, the palmettes step outward in rings, and the border closes the whole thing as a continuous band. The result is a design with no orientation at all — no top, no bottom, correct from every seat at a table. It is worth comparing with a round rug that simply carries an all-over repeat: that reads as a piece of pattern cut to shape, while this reads as a design that could only ever have been a circle.
