A deep indigo field anchors this hand-knotted Caucasian Shirvan rug, its central axis stacked with serrated diamond medallions, eight-pointed stars and hooked vine motifs, scattered with stylised blossoms, serrated leaves and small bird figures in madder red, ivory, saffron and teal. Ivory spandrels frame the corners, and the whole composition is held by a striking madder-red main border carrying the diagonal barber-pole stripe-and-rosette band that distinguishes the Seychour school of the Kuba region.
It is hand-knotted in Afghanistan by master weavers working in the older Caucasian manner, with a fine, even knot count, a low clipped pile and flat-woven kilim ends. The wool is hand-spun and coloured with natural dyes, which give the indigo and madder their depth and the quiet, light-catching variation that machine-made rugs can never reproduce.
Densely woven and built to last for generations, this is a collector-grade piece — equally at home as the centrepiece of a formal living or dining room or as an heirloom investment. As a hand-made rug, it is genuinely one of a kind.

Care instructions
- Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
- Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
- Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
- Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.
This rug speaks the visual language of the Caucasus. The field follows the Shirvan tradition of the eastern Caucasus — a dense, all-over arrangement built around a vertical chain of serrated stepped medallions, with eight-pointed stars, hooked running-dog motifs, stylised blossoms and tiny animal and bird figures filling the space around them. Nothing is left empty; the abundance itself is the point. The main border is the signature of the Seychour weavers of the Kuba district: a bold diagonal stripe set with rosettes, framed by reciprocal-trefoil and star-in-diamond guard stripes. Woven in Afghanistan by hand from naturally dyed, hand-spun wool, every medallion is drawn slightly differently and the indigo shifts subtly across the field — the unmistakable fingerprint of a single weaver at the loom rather than a machine.
