Care instructions

Slit tapestry is the oldest and simplest way of weaving a pattern: each colour is worked back and forth across its own area, and where two colours meet the weaver leaves a narrow vertical slit rather than interlocking them. It produces a smooth, thin cloth finished identically on both faces, and it forces every outline into steps, since a diagonal can only be built from stacked rectangles. That constraint is the whole aesthetic. Here the compartments inside the great medallion are filled almost at random — navy beside sky blue beside ivory beside coral — so the eye keeps finding new arrangements, and the wide yellow and green borders push the cerise field forward rather than containing it.
