Navy and Beige Yamoud Rug, Hand-Knotted Wool

The gül is the tribal emblem of the Turkmen peoples of Central Asia, and each tribe wove its own, repeated down the field so that a rug announced who had made it before anything else registered. Yamoud takes its name from the Yomud, and what distinguishes it is not the gül alone but the proportion around it: the field is drawn narrow to carry a single column of güls, and the borders are widened until they occupy almost as much of the rug as the field itself. Navy is the coolest ground these rugs come in and it changes the balance completely: against red the apricot güls glow warm, but against indigo they read almost coppery, and the camel borders separate from the field far more sharply than they do on the red version. Woven in Pakistan, where Turkmen weaving traditions have continued for generations.
