Oxblood Turkmen Gül Bashiri, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted with an ivory fringe and a striped woven band at the lower end.

About as forgiving as a rug gets. The colour is exceptionally deep — half the wool on this rug measures above 0.73 on the nought-to-one saturation scale — and under half a per cent of the surface is pale enough to count as neutral, so there is almost nothing to mark. The pale rose inside the güls is the one vulnerable colour and it carries all their internal drawing. The ivory fringe will show soiling long before the pile does.

Gül rugs are almost never square. The emblem is normally drawn wider than it is tall and the lattice follows, which is why most fields of this kind read as rows first and columns second. Measure this one and the lattice comes out at 16.99cm between columns and 15.75cm between rows — an aspect of 1.08, within eight per cent of a true square. The harmonics confirm it rather than the reverse: going down the field the pattern matches itself at 15.8, 31.5, 47.3 and 63.0cm, clean multiples with no drift.

On a square lattice the eye stops picking a direction. Rows and columns carry equal weight, the diagonals become as legible as the straights, and the field reads as a single woven surface rather than as ranks of emblems marching down the rug. The weaver has pushed that further by packing the güls until under a tenth of the field is open ground — there is almost no red left showing between them. The result is a field with no internal rhythm to follow, which is why the very deep borders matter so much here: they take nearly sixty per cent of the rug, and they are what gives the eye somewhere to start.
