No medallion here — the field is given over entirely to an all-over floral, mirrored down the centre and again across the middle, so that every spray of palmettes, curled leaves and rosettes has a twin facing it. The palette is soft salmon rose over a cream ground, with moss green, teal and wine picking out the foliage. Because nothing anchors the centre, the framing falls to the border: a broad near-black band of palmettes and flowering vine, deliberately heavier and darker than the field it contains, with narrow rose and ivory guard stripes and cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk at 30/30 quality — 30 knots to the inch in each direction, about 900 to the square inch and something over 1.3 million knots in this rug. The pile carries a directional sheen, so from one end the salmon warms and comes forward, and from the other the cream ground opens and the green foliage lifts instead. At 77×123cm this suits a bedside, an entry or a spot beside a chair. It reads as a soft, warm-toned rug from across a room, with the dark border doing the work of holding it in place.

100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 30/30 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

The cream ground will show a spill more readily than a dark rug would, though the density of the pattern hides light marking better than a plain pale field. A soft salmon is also a lighter dye than a deep red and will fade sooner, so keep the rug out of strong light. Use a rug pad underneath.

An all-over design without a medallion changes what the border has to do. In a medallion rug the border is decoration — the centre already tells the eye where to look, so the frame can be tonal and quiet. Take the medallion away and the border becomes the only thing holding the composition together, which is why this one is so much darker and heavier than the field it surrounds. Compare it with a tonal all-over, where a border pitched close to the field lets the pattern seem to run off the edges; here the near-black band stops it dead, and the field reads as a panel rather than a fragment. The other thing to look for is the mirroring. The drawing is reflected down the long centre line and again across the middle, so any spray you pick has three counterparts. Find a distinctive leaf near the centre and the other three will be exactly where you expect.
