A finely hand-knotted Nain from the desert-edge town of Nain in central Persia (Iran), woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The deep red field carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of scrolling vines, palmettes and curled saz leaves, drawn in ivory, sage and the pale sky-blue linework that is the hallmark of Nain weaving.

A round radial medallion in cream and blue anchors the centre, with pendant palmettes above and below and ivory spandrels closing the corners. A broad ivory main border carries blue and sage flowerheads on a scrolling vine, framed by fine rope-twist guard stripes. A one-of-a-kind piece.

A red-ground Nain is worth noticing. The town built its reputation on ivory fields, where the pale blue drawing reads as line on a light page, and red is uncommon enough that most Nain collections do not contain one. It changes what the design does: on ivory the arabesque is legible immediately and the rug reads calm, while on red the ivory vinework becomes the light and the whole field carries far more weight. The ivory border then does the reverse job at the edges, cooling the piece back down. Nain has woven to this standard since the 1930s, when the town's cloth weavers turned to carpets and brought a textile-maker's precision to the loom — which is what allows drawing this fine to hold together across a field this strong.
