A finely hand-knotted Nain from the desert-edge town of Nain in central Persia (Iran), woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The cobalt blue field carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of scrolling vines, palmettes and curled saz leaves, drawn in ivory, cream and pale sky blue with wine red picked out in the smaller flowerheads.

A round radial medallion in ivory, red and blue anchors the centre, with pendant palmettes above and below. A broad cream main border carries blue and brown flowerheads on a scrolling vine, framed by rope-twist guard stripes and a plain camel outer band. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Have the rug professionally hand-cleaned every few years.

Nain uses blue more thoughtfully than almost any other Persian weaving town, and this rug shows the full range of it in one piece: a saturated cobalt for the ground, pale chalky blue for the linework that traces every vine, and a mid blue again in the border flowerheads. Three blues, each doing a different job, and none of them competing. The cobalt is the unusual choice — Nain generally reaches for ivory or a much darker navy, and this clear mid blue sits between the two, bright enough to carry the ivory arabesque without the heaviness a navy ground brings. A cream border cools it at the edges. Nain has woven to this standard since the 1930s, when the town's cloth weavers turned to carpets.
