Only one available — one-of-a-kind.
A warm gold field with no medallion at all — instead an all-over afshan pattern of palmettes, curled boteh, serrated leaves and small flowering sprays, linked by fine green vine and repeating across the whole ground. The palette stays deliberately close: chestnut, tan, moss green, cream and a soft blue-grey, all sitting within a step or two of the gold behind them. A chestnut-brown main border of palmettes and rosettes closes it in, with narrow sawtooth guard bands and cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in silk at 50/50 quality — 50 knots to the inch in each direction, 2,500 to the square inch, and something in the region of 5.8 million knots in this rug. That is about as fine as hand-knotting goes, and it shows in the thin green vine, which stays a continuous line at a width of two or three knots. At 94×159cm this suits a bedside, a study or a small seating area. Being tonal, it photographs flatter than it looks in the room — in person the sheen separates the browns from the gold as you move, which a photograph cannot show.
100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 50/50 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.
The gold ground is pale enough to show a spill clearly, so keep it away from where food and drink are handled. A silk this fine also shades and tracks where it is walked on — that is normal and reverses when the pile is brushed back. Use a rug pad underneath to stop it creeping and to take the abrasion off the foundation.
Afshan means scattered, or sprinkled, and it describes a design with no centre. There is no medallion to anchor the eye, no spandrels marking the corners — just a repeating unit that carries on in every direction until the border cuts it off. The easiest way to confirm you are looking at a true afshan rather than an all-over pattern that merely lacks a medallion is to follow the motifs to the edge: they are sliced through mid-form, a palmette losing half its petals where the guard band begins, because the pattern was never designed to stop there. Designs like this were made for rooms where furniture would cover part of the floor, since nothing important is lost when the centre disappears under a table. The practical consequence for a buyer is that this rug can be turned end for end or laid at any angle and still look correct, which a medallion rug cannot.
