Only one available — one-of-a-kind.
A sage green field, unusual in itself, carrying a dense floral ground of palmettes, rosettes and serrated leaves in coral, apricot, moss and cream. Over it runs a second and quite separate system: curling arabesque scrollwork in near-black, gathering into a lobed central medallion with pendants at both ends and returning as four large corner spandrels. The dark main border repeats the palmettes on the same near-black ground, framed by narrow guard stripes, with a green selvedge and cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in silk at 36/36 quality — 36 knots to the inch in each direction, close to 1,300 to the square inch, and around 2.8 million knots in this rug. The pile carries a directional sheen that does something particular here: from one end the sage field reads cool and grey-green, from the other it warms towards olive, and the coral flowers lift or recede accordingly. At 91×153cm it suits a bedside, a study or a small seating area. A green ground is rarer than red or ivory and considerably harder to place — it wants a room that is not already competing with it.
100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 36/36 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.
Green is among the least light-fast of the traditional dye families, and on a field this pale any fading will show as an uneven patch rather than an overall softening. Keep it well away from a sunny window. A silk this fine also shades and tracks where it is walked on — normal, and it reverses when the pile is brushed back. Use a rug pad underneath.
There are two separate drawing systems in this rug, and once you see them apart you cannot unsee them. One is khataei — the floral vocabulary of palmettes, rosettes and leaves that fills the green ground. The other is islimi, the arabesque: an abstract split-leaf tendril that spirals, divides and rejoins without ever becoming a flower. Persian workshops treated these as distinct disciplines, drawn by different hands, and the skill lay in overlaying them so that neither obscures the other. The test is easy to run: look inside the central medallion and the corner spandrels. They are almost pure arabesque, scrollwork with barely a blossom in it, while the field around them is almost pure floral. The near-black used for the arabesque is not a colour choice so much as a structural one — it is the only value dark enough to hold a continuous line across a ground as busy as this one.
