An all-over checkerboard runs across the whole field, tiny brick-like squares alternating between deep chocolate brown and warm cream and camel. There is no border — just the steady, textured rhythm of the grid, hand-knotted so each little square sits slightly differently and the pattern shimmers as the light moves.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool rich in lanolin, it is dense, soft underfoot, and naturally resistant to everyday wear. The graphic brown-and-cream check is a warm, easy-to-place neutral, and the small irregularities of the weave mark it as a genuine one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

Gabbeh takes its name from a Persian word meaning raw or natural, a nod to the honest, tribal character of these weavings. The all-over check is one of the simplest tribal motifs and one of the most effective, a field of small alternating squares that reads as texture from across a room and as careful handwork up close. Worked here in brown and cream, it carries the warmth of natural wool with a clean, almost modern geometry. Small variations in colour and weave are the mark of a genuine handmade rug, the trace of a single weaver rather than a machine.
