A deep forest green fills the whole field, plain and unbordered, its colour gently broken by the natural horizontal striation of hand-spun wool — soft passages of teal, grey and warm brown that shift across the surface as the light moves. This abrash, the subtle banding left by small-batch natural dyeing, is what gives a plain Gabbeh its depth and life.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool rich in lanolin, it is dense, soft underfoot, and naturally resistant to everyday wear. A plain, saturated colour like this is the most versatile of all, a quiet anchor under furniture or a calm note in a busy room, and the small irregularities of the weave mark it as a genuine one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on low suction without a rotating brush.
  • Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Use a professional rug cleaner for any deep clean.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool and settles within the first few months.

Gabbeh takes its name from a Persian word meaning raw or natural, a nod to the honest, tribal character of these weavings. The plain Gabbeh is the purest expression of that idea: no pattern, no border, just a single field of hand-spun, naturally dyed wool. The beauty is in the abrash, the gentle horizontal striations of teal, grey and brown that the dye leaves behind, giving the deep green a living, hand-made depth no machine can copy. Small variations in colour and weave are the mark of a genuine handmade rug, the trace of a single weaver rather than a machine.
