Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A near-black indigo ground carrying an all-over ikat design in hot magenta, peacock teal, cornflower blue, lilac and slate, with small acid-yellow eyes at the centre of many motifs. Every shape is drawn with a feathered, comb-toothed edge rather than a clean outline. There is no border of any kind — the pattern runs to the selvedge on all four sides.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool. A quarter of the surface registers as a colour boundary rather than as flat colour, which is a direct consequence of how the motifs are drawn. At 242×310cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-spun and naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Ghazni wool takes a saturated dye particularly well, which is what makes a palette this bright possible without the colours going chalky.

A near-black ground covering just over half the surface makes this a forgiving rug underfoot — there is almost no pale wool anywhere to mark. The trade-off is lint: dark grounds show pale fibres and pet hair far more readily than they show dirt. With no border, there is also no plain margin at the edges, so wear at the selvedge sits directly against the pattern rather than in a quiet band.

Ikat is a cloth, not a carpet design. The pattern is made by tying and dyeing the warp threads before a single weft is passed, and because the tied bundles never sit in perfect register, every edge in the finished cloth comes out soft and feathered. That blur is not a decision. It is what the process does, and for centuries it was the thing weavers tried to minimise.

On this rug the blur has been reproduced deliberately, knot by knot. Look closely at any motif and its outline is not a line at all but a comb of fine teeth, each one an individual knot placed to imitate the bleeding of dye through a tied warp. Measured across the whole surface, a quarter of the rug registers as a colour boundary rather than as flat colour — which on a design of this scale is extraordinarily high, and is entirely down to those serrated edges. So an accident of one craft has been transcribed into another where nothing is accidental: what the dyer could not prevent, the knotter has had to construct on purpose. The rug is also completely borderless, which is unusual in this tradition and reinforces the reference — cloth comes off the loom by the metre, without a frame, and this is drawn as though it were a length of it.
