A hand-knotted double-knot rug from Pakistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation in a classic Tabriz all-over floral design. The soft gold-cream field is filled edge to edge with a repeating lattice of flowering plants and vases, worked in muted sage, teal, rose and brick that give the piece a gently faded, antique character.

A deep ruby-red main border of palmettes and scrolling vine frames the field, with camel and ivory guard stripes stepping the design out to the selvedge. A one-of-a-kind piece.

The workshops of Lahore and its surrounding towns have long woven the great Persian city designs, and the double knot they use gives a dense, hard-wearing pile that holds fine detail well. This rug takes the Tabriz all-over floral as its model: rather than building to a central medallion, the gold-cream field repeats a lattice of flowering plants and vases across its whole surface, so the eye can settle anywhere. The colouring is what makes it — sage, teal, rose and brick kept deliberately soft against the ground, so the piece reads as though it has already had decades of light on it, while the ruby-red border holds everything firmly in place.
