Gold and Sage Repeating Floral, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Instead of one medallion at the centre, this rug repeats the medallion idea across the whole field: large lobed rosettes set out in a diamond arrangement, each a complete small composition with its own blossoms, leaves and border of petals. It is a design that rewards standing still and looking down at it, because the closer you get the more each rosette turns out to differ from its neighbours in colouring. The antique gold ground holds them together and keeps the effect warm rather than busy, while the sage-green border cools the edge and stops the gold running on. Woven in Pakistan on the double knot, the denser of the two knots used there, which is what allows each rosette to be drawn at this scale without losing its detail.
