A finely hand-knotted double-knot rug from Pakistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation in an all-over floral design. The antique gold field is covered edge to edge with a scrolling vine carrying palmettes, curved serrated leaves and rosettes, worked in deep teal, forest green, coral and ivory against the warm ground.

A wide gold main border of palmettes and flowering vine frames the field, stepped out through several narrow guard stripes in the same muted palette. A one-of-a-kind piece.

An all-over field has no centre, and that is its practical advantage as much as its beauty: the vine simply runs, so the rug looks right from every side of the room and can be turned end for end each year to even out the wear. What gives this piece its particular character is the colour pairing — deep teal and forest green set against a warm antique gold, a combination that reads as rich rather than bright, and that sits comfortably with wood and leather. The drawing is dense but orderly, each palmette answered by another across the vertical axis, so the eye finds symmetry even without a medallion to rest on. Woven in Pakistan on the double knot, the denser of the two knots used there.
