Nain sits on the edge of the central Iranian desert, and since the 1930s its workshops have been known for some of the most finely knotted rugs in all of Persia. This piece is a textbook example: an ivory-cream field carrying a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of scrolling vines, palmettes and curled saz leaves, all drawn in the pale sky-blue linework that is Nain's signature. At the centre sits a round radial medallion built up in concentric rings of tiny palmettes, answered by deep navy spandrels at each corner and framed by a broad salmon-camel border. The restraint of that palette — cream, soft blue, camel and navy — is what sets a Nain apart from the more saturated weaves of Isfahan or Kashan, and it is exactly why these rugs settle so easily into a contemporary room.
