A finely hand-knotted double-knot rug from Pakistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation in an all-over floral design. The near-black field is covered edge to edge with a scrolling vine carrying large palmettes, curved serrated leaves and rosettes, worked almost entirely in old gold and ivory with small touches of red and green, so the pattern seems lit from within against the dark ground.

A wide old-gold main border of palmettes and flowering vine reverses the contrast, framed by narrow guard stripes and a plain black outer band. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted using the double knot.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Dark-ground rugs work differently from pale ones. On ivory or gold the pattern sits on the surface; on a near-black field the gold drawing appears to float above it, and the whole rug changes character with the light in the room — quiet and almost solid at dusk, fully articulated in daylight. That effect is why the darkest grounds were historically reserved for the finest weaving, since every line has to be exact to read against the black at all. Here the vine runs all over with no medallion, carrying palmettes and curved leaves in old gold and ivory, and the wide gold border reverses the contrast so the eye is drawn back inward. Woven in Pakistan on the double knot, the denser of the two knots used there.
