Afshan means scattered in Persian, and it describes a field with no centre: instead of building towards a medallion, the vine simply runs, carrying flowers and leaves evenly across the whole surface so that no part of the rug asks for more attention than any other. It is a quietly practical design as well as a beautiful one, since a rug without a medallion can be placed under furniture, walked across at any angle or turned end for end without ever looking wrong. Here the cream-gold ground keeps the dense drawing light, and the teal green running through the flowerheads is what gives the piece its freshness against the warm camel border. Woven in Pakistan on the double knot, the denser of the two knots used there, which is what lets the vine hold this level of detail.
